Warm December Caps Off Warm 2011

The final figures are in, and December capped off what was an abnormally warm 2011.

Here in Hingham, the average high in December was 47.1 and the average low was 29.5. That averaged to a mean temperature of 38.3 degrees, a value that is 4.8 higher than normal. That tied December 2011 for the 7th warmest December on record (since 1960). The warmest Decembers, which featured an average of 39.7, came in 2001 and 2006.

That helped push 2011 into the books as the 8th warmest year on record. The average temperature was 51.8. Remember that 2010 was the warmest year on record (52.6).

Boston was also abnormally warm in December, with an average temperature of 40.0. That tied December 2011 with December 1957 as the 6th warmest December on record. As was the case in Hingham, 2006 was the warmest December on record.

Also like Hingham, and many other surrounding communities, December only boasted a trace of snowfall. As noted last week, the ‘snow-less’ winter to this point does not bode well for those hoping for a snowy season.
