Just after 10:10 PM last night, reports of a bright blue flash came streaming in from locations all over New England, and Southern Canada.
Today, Porrsmouthwebcam.net posted a picture of a bright object streaking through the sky over Portsmouth last night just after 10:12 PM. The image is consistent with reports from last night in both the object’s color and direction of travel.
Dr. Mercedes Richards, a professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Penn State, says, “this streak looks a lot like a meteor formed from a large rock. I suspect that a meteorite may have hit the ground near.”
A simply remarkable sight to be caught on camera! Please leave a comment if you saw the blue flash where you are.

Hey Frank, thanks for the update. Still snowing at home, but with an east wind it’s going to be hard to accumulate too much. I’ll be back home next week for break.
Wow! This is a great find. I’m glad that this was caught on camera. I saw the blue flash from the parking lot of Barnes & Noble; my first thought was that it might be some kind of aircraft flying into Pease, but a second or two later, I realized that it would have been coming in far too quickly for a safe landing!
My next thought was an astronomical phenomenon, but it passed by so quickly that I didn’t think I’d be able to find a photo. This is exactly what I saw, though.
That must have been something to see, thanks for posting!
Any possibility of seeing an aurora borealis tonight or tomorrow in Hingham because of the sunspots?
Unlikely because of clouds and rain that will be coming through. Poor timing unfortunately!
I saw this meteorite from my window in downtown Montreal. I saw it very clearly and very briefly. It was a blue fireball with a blue tail which went streaking past my window in a south west direction and followed by a white flash that lit up the sky for one second. A friend in a nearby neighborhood saw the flash. I’m grateful to have seen this.
