Wind Fans Beachfront Blaze

Southwest wind gusts up to 53 MPH fueled a beachfront blaze in the Humarock section of Scituate this afternoon.

The initial fire, which started in a kitchen on Humarock Beach Front, quickly spread to neighboring homes on the howling wind. Fire crews from several nearby towns responded to the blaze which destroyed 3 homes, and severely damaged another. Three firefighters were taken to the hospital with minor injuries in the three alarm fire. The Red Cross arrived to provide assistance after the fire.

The wind caused less severe problems elsewhere around the area.

In Weymouth, a tree brought down power lines on Front Street near Kingman Street.

In Billerica and Holbrook, the winds fanned small brush fires.

Here in Hingham, 49 MPH winds knocked down a tree and power lines on Thaxter Street. Localized power outages were reported.

In addition to the gusty winds, temperatures soared to record levels. Boston hit 68, besting the daily record set in 1995 by one. Hingham reached a high of 69.
