The Winter Solstice officially occurred at 6:12 AM, making this year’s start to winter the earliest since 1896.
Of course that also means today is the shortest day of the year. Total daylight is only 9 hours 4 minutes and 33 seconds. Interestingly enough, today does not feature the earliest sunset nor the latest sunrise.
The latest sunrise occurs on January 5 (7:14 AM), and the earliest sunset occurred on December 14 (4:12 PM).
With highs near 50 on Friday, we’ll have to wait for weekend highs in the 30s before it actually starts to feel like winter!
