Downpours & Powerful Wind Thursday Morning

Expected snowfall Wednesday Night-Thursday Morning for Greater Boston and South ShoreAfter a light dusting of snow Christmas morning, a much more powerful storm is taking aim at Greater Boston for Wednesday night and Thursday.

An area of low pressure will move in after dinner on Wednesday. Aside from areas along the coast (green shade on graphic), this precipitation will start as snow. Rain will fall along the coast and in much of Southeastern Massachusetts.

Over the course of the night, the rain/snow line will push back to the west. By morning, expect all areas inside of 495 to be switched over to rain. Before that happens, areas between 128 and 495 will see a dusting to 1″ of snow. Along 495 expect more like 1-3″. North and west of 495, where snow will fall for a longer period of time, much more snow is expected.

The rain Thursday morning will be quite heavy. Most areas in Eastern Massachusetts will come away with 1-3″ of rain. Meanwhile, winds will ramp up. Gusts between 50 and 60 MPH are likely, especially along the immediate coastline.

The precipitation and winds will relax during the afternoon hours.
