Hingham’s Fruit Center is just one of hundreds of grocery stores nation-wide bracing for a produce problem.
Four days of freezing conditions across parts of California and Arizona are expected to severely impact the winter vegetable crop. Carrots, beets, radishes, broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage will all take a hit in the cold snap.
Green leafy vegetables, specially lettuce, are expected to be hit hardest.
The abnormally cold weather will kill some vegetables, and will reduce the quality of those that survive. As such, prices nation-wide are likely to rise.
To protect against the cold farmers are pre-irrigating and covering the crops.
