Travel Ban, “Code Red” Alert for Coastal Residents

Coastal Flooding, Waves Crashing in ScituateA statewide travel ban went into effect at 4 PM, the first issued since the Blizzard of ’78. Only essential personnel are allowed to travel until further notice, and violators may be fined or arrested.

At the same time, coastal residents in Marshfield are now under a “Code Red” Alert. As a result, town officials are asking coastal residents to self evacuate for the next two high tide cycles (tonight and tomorrow morning). Scituate has also “highly recommended that immediate coastal areas prone to flooding be evacuated.”

As of 4 PM, winds are already gusting to 44 MPH in Hingham. The worst of the storm will not arrive until 8pm tonight. If you plan on burning a fire to keep warm tonight, remember to put a screen in front of the fireplace to prevent ashes from being blown into your house. A sudden gust of wind spread ashes and sparks into a home on Baker Hill Drive in Hingham, filling the home with smoke.

Snowfall, to this point, ranges from 1-3″. Boston has picked up 2.6″ so far, Lexington has 2.5″, Hingham has 2″, and Hanover has measured 1″.
