Flash Flood Hits State College

In the two years I’ve been at Penn State, never have I seen so much exciting weather as I have this year.

On Tuesday, a ferocious downpour dumped nearly 1.5″ of rain in State College in a matter of 20 minutes. The intensity of the rain, combined with the already saturated ground, led to pockets of flash flooding.

At the time of the downpour I was in Walker Building, home of the Department of Meteorology. After seeing the flooding on Atherton Street just outside, I ran to take some pictures. This picture in particular, showing a CATA Blue Loop navigating the flood, quickly spread online.

Penn State shared the picture on Facebook, and WTAJ-TV used it on air. Other flooding pictures were used in a story on StateCollege.com.

The Daily Collegian ran a story about the flash flooding today, and included a few words from me about the cause of the flash flooding.
