After more tornado talks at the first day of the general National Weather Association meeting on Monday, our group of Penn State students decided to see the ramifications of tornadoes first hand. We drove about 45 minutes west to visit Tuscaloosa, home of the University of Alabama and scene of a devastating EF-4 tornado in April. Six months later, the signs of that storm are still highly visible.
Around the intersection of 15th and University, nearly an entire city block is wiped clean of homes, businesses, and trees. Other nearby businesses, like this CVS, are still badly damaged. Still, signs around town proclaim that businesses are ‘Coming Back Soon’. Aside from the brutalized landscape, life seemed to be operating as normal.
