My final day at the National Weather Association conference featured lots of information about Dual Pol radar, the latest technology being rolled out by the National Weather Service. Unlike conventional radar, Dual Pol scans the skies in both the horizontal and vertical directions.
Multiple presenters highlighted uses of the Dual Pol technology, including the ability to better detect a debris ball associated with a tornado. The new radar will also be able to better detect precipitation type. The new Dual Pol radar will be installed at the Taunton, Massachusetts (KBOX) site between January 2 and January 15, 2012.
Overall, the conference was a fantastic learning experience!
